The Postalmklamm via ferrata follows the rock walls of the narrow Postalm gorge, high above the Rußbach torrent. It then leads to a second, optional section, offering D and F difficulty variants.

Access
The Postalmstraße toll road begins just south of Strobl, near Lake Wolfgang (Wolfgangsee). We follow it until we arrive at the car park designated for Postalmklamm via ferrata climbers. If the car park is full, there are a few additional parking spots available along the road.
By public transport, we can take a train to Bad Ischl, followed by a bus that stops at the same road bend as the car park mentioned earlier.
Approach to start
From the information board at the car park, we follow the trail downhill until we reach the starting point of the via ferrata.
The route
The first section starts with a wobbly bridge with wooden planks for the feet. We then proceed along the side walls of the gorge until we reach the second bridge. This one is also challenging, featuring thick vertical textile ropes alongside the safety line, which can also be used to help you move forward.
After another traverse along the walls, we encounter a unique feature of the route: a jump from one wall to a bracket on the opposite wall, using only the upper cable for support. There are multiple ways to approach this, but the most straightforward option is to simply jump while gripping the upper cable.
We proceed along the opposite wall of the canyon until we cross another wooden bridge near a waterfall. This bridge is shorter and has only one cable for hand support.
At this point, the route divides into two variants: an easier path that continues deeper into the canyon, and a more challenging one that exits the canyon. Both routes eventually converge further up at a junction, where you have the option to either take a trail to exit the route or continue with the more challenging D and F variants, which are sure to appeal to experienced climbers.
Descent
We take the hiking trail near the Postalmstraße and make our way down to the car park.
Good to know
- Don’t underestimate the overhanging F variant.
- Slippery after rain.
