Via ferrata Maria e Andrea Ferrari – Ra Bujela (C) Italy

Ra Bujela is a short via ferrata of medium difficulty, nicely built on one of the rock towers behind Rifugio Duca d’Aosta. It’s an excellent choice for days with uncertain weather when longer routes higher up on the mountain, such as the Giovanni Lipella or Giuseppe Olivieri and Gianni Aglio via ferratas, can’t be climbed safely.

Access

We drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo towards Falzarego Pass and turn right to Baita Piè Tofana restaurant and the base station of Duca D’Aosta chairlift, where we find a large car park. This is a 15-minutes drive from Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Approach to start

Take the chairlift (timetable and prices) or hike for about 1h – 1h30min on trail 405 to the Duca d’Aosta hut. From the Duca d’Aosta chairlift station walk a short distance on the ski slope and you will encounter a sign pointing to the start of the route.

Alternatively, you can start the approach from Rifugio Angelo Dibona, hike to Rifugio Pomedes and descend to the start of the via ferrata.

The route

Metal brackets, a tight cable and many natural holds are what you will encounter on Ra Bujela via ferrata. The highlights are two wooden bridges, but the entire climb offers a rewarding experience on a well designed line along the Ra Bujela rock tower.

From the top, you’ll enjoy stunning views, particularly of the rocky ridge of Croda da Lago to the South.

Descent

Follow the marked path back to Rifugio Duca d’Aosta

Good to know

  • It can be climbed as a half-day activity or as an additional via ferrata in the evening if you spend the night at Rifugio Pomedes, which can serve as a base for other via ferratas in the area.
  • On the other rock tower you can climb via ferrata Ra Pegna, an easier route.
