Access

From Predil / Predel Pass (1156 m), we drive east-northeast along the winding, toll road to Koča na Mangrtskem sedlu, which translates to “Hut on Mangart Saddle.” We can park the car on a bend, south of the hut, or drive further up to another parking area where the road forms a loop.

This road is occasionally closed in the spring due to avalanche risks.

Approach to start

From where we parked the car, we hike to Mangart Pass at 2055 m. Here, we turn south and reach the start of the via ferrata cable in just a few minutes.

A much longer approach is on via ferrata Italiana – Mangart, which connects to Mangart Pass from the italian side.

The route

You can expect to encounter both well-secured sections and areas without cables, where you’ll need to climb or scramble up to grade 1+.

The route takes you along ledges and ridges, through and over gullies, and up to the summit of Mangart (2677 m), where you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views. The cable ends below the peak.

Descent

From the summit, head east along the easy path, then turn north to complete a loop back to the starting point. In early summer, be cautious of snow fields along this path, which is considered the upper part of the italian route.

Good to know

  • The access road, the highest in Slovenia, is quite narrow in some sections.
